Living for what’s best

January 25, 2010

Because we can fill our lives with so many things and so many things are clamoring for our attention, we need to learn how to focus our time and energy on what really matters.  I believe this is the single biggest step that we can take as Christ followers in order to give God His rightful place in our lives.  This concept is found in one of Paul’s prayers in the book of Philippians as Paul prays for the Christians in the city of Philipi.

Paul says in Philippians 1:9 that it starts with a growing love for God which seeks to put God in His rightful place in our lives.  This desire alone however will not help us to decide what is best as Paul states in verse 10.   This desire must be accompanied by a continual testing of things in my life.  That’s what the word “decide” means.  It was used in Paul’s day so that people could determine the true worth of valuable objects by putting them into the fire and seeing if they could stand up.  That’s what we must do on a daily basis.  Does this activity or choice stand up?  Does it bring honor to God?  This may be good choice but is there a better one?  Between two good choices which one is best?

If we are driven by our moods or emotions or sudden impulses rather than a rational testing of our choices and decisions, we are more likely to live a life that is less than giving God His rightful place.

So, is there a choice you are faced with right now that you will commit to taking the time to test it before you say “yes” or “no”?

God will help you as commit to making the right choices.
